Nenad Buzjak was born on September 30, 1968, in Zagreb, where he completed his primary and secondary education, undergraduate studies in geography and history (1994), and postgraduate studies in geography at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb (2006).
From 1994 to 2009, he worked as a geography teacher at A. Augustinčić Primary School in Zaprešić. Since 2009, he has been employed at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. He is the course leader for "Geoecology and Environmental Protection" and "Applied Geoecology." He was a long-time coordinator of the course "Fieldwork in Biological, Geographical, and Geological Environmental Protection" in the undergraduate Environmental Science program at the Faculty of Science. Additionally, he participates in the delivery of courses such as "Natural Basis in Spatial Planning" and "Natural Basis in Tourism." In 2010, he was awarded the "Brdo" prize for the best teacher at the Department of Geography, as voted by the students. In 2021, he received the Croatian Geographical Society award for the promotion and popularization of geography. In 2024, he was awarded the Croatian Geographical Society’s science award.
From the 2017/2018 academic year to 2019/2020, he served as Deputy Head of the Department of Geography. In the 2020/2021 academic year, he was elected Acting Head of the Department of Geography, and during the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic years, he held the position of Head of the Department of Geography.
His scientific research areas include geoecology, speleology, geomorphology, photogrammetry, and nature protection.
From 2007 to 2010, he was a researcher, and from 2010 to 2014, he was the project leader of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports (MZOŠ) scientific project "Geomorphological Mapping of Croatia." He was also a researcher on the MZOŠ project "Geomorphological and Geoecological Studies of Croatian Karst." Since 2022, he has been the leader of the Croatian part of the Slovenian-Croatian research project IPS-2022-02-2260, "Dynamics and Distribution of CO2 in the Karst Vadose and Epiphreatic Zone" (ARRS & HRRZ). Additionally, he initiated, led, or collaborated on numerous scientific and professional projects.
In 2021, he was appointed a research associate at the "Emil Racovita" Institute of Speleology (ERIS) of the Romanian Academy.
He is a member of professional associations, including the Croatian Geographical Society and the Croatian Geomorphological Society. He is one of the founders of the former Speleological Section of the Croatian Geographical Society (later the Speleological Society Dinaridi) and the Speleological Club Samobor, where he remains active and serves as president. From 2017 to 2021, he was president of the Croatian Speleological Federation. Since 2023, he has been the Deputy Head of the Nature Conservation Commission of the Croatian Mountaineering Association.
He is a member of the editorial boards of scientific journals Acta Geographica Croatica, Geografski razgledi/Geographical Reviews and Dela, the professional-methodological journal Geografski horizont, and the journal Meridijani. He was a long-time editorial board member of the speleological journal Subterranea Croatica.
He has participated in and/or organized numerous speleological, cave diving, and geomorphological research projects and expeditions in Croatia. The results of these projects have been presented at conferences in Croatia and abroad and published in over 100 articles, book chapters, reviews, newspaper articles, maps, and studies. He is the author and co-author of two editions of the geography textbook and workbook for the 8th grade of primary school (Meridijani Publishing House, Samobor).
