Description:
COURSE GOALS: The basic goal of this course is to develop student's ability to autonomously use computers for various applications during their undergraduate and graduate studies. In addition, the students will be given the basic knowledge about application of computers in physics teaching. Specific goals include using computers for data analysis and graphical presentation of results, for text processing, for creating slide-shows, for solving physics and mathematical problems and visualization of physical phenomena using appropriate software. The students will also develop and improve their ability to independently use the available literature, they will broaden their knowledge of computer related nomenclature in Croatian and English and they will learn how to concisely present ideas and results.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
1.3. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic experimental methods, instruments and methods of experimental data processing in physics;
1.5. describe the framework of natural sciences;
2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
2.2. recognize and follow the logic of arguments, evaluate the adequacy of arguments and construct well supported arguments;
2.3. use mathematical methods to solve standard physics problems;
2.5. use information and communication technology efficiently (to foster active enquiry, collaboration and interaction in the classroom)
4. COMMUNICATION SKILLS
4.1. present complex ideas clearly and concisely;
4.2. present their own research results at education or scientific meetings;
4.4. use the written and oral English language communication skills that are essential for pursuing a career in physics and education;
5. LEARNING SKILLS
5.1. search for and use professional literature as well as any other sources of relevant information;

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
By completing this course, students will be able to:
* use computers for data analysis and graphical presentation of results at the level required by assignments in physics laboratories in the course of the study
* make slide-show presentations using appropriate software
* use Latex environment for text processing
* solve simple physical and mathematical problems using computers
* visualize various physics phenomena using appropriate software
* integrate the utilization of software: use the output of one program as the input of another
* use computers for presenting problems, ideas and results

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Course contents on a week-by-week basis:
1. Application of tools for statistical data analysis from Office packages.
2. Application of tools from Office packages for graphical presentation of results
3. Tools for linear regression, curve fitting and interpretation of results
4. Data analysis and graphical formatting of the results on an example of a simulated physical measurement.
5. Simple text and mathematical formulas in Latex.
6. Tables and figures in Latex.
7. Text formatting, citing and referencing in Latex.
8. Basic mathematical operations, equation solving and definitions of variables and functions in Sage (www.sagemath.org) or equivalent software.
9. Differentiation, integration and differential equations solving using Sage.
10. Plotting of two and three dimensional graphs in Sage.
11. Solving physics problems from mechanics and electrostatics using Sage.
12. Visualization of physics phenomena using computer.
13. Visualization of physics phenomena using computer.
14. Creating presentations using computer.
15. Summary and repetition of the most important topics from the course.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Students have to attend the course lectures and exercises (at least 70%) where they are required to actively participate by solving given problems using personal computers in the computer laboratory.

GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of the course to proceed to the examination. Students are graded through a practical examination on a personal computer. During the test the students solve given problems and save the solutions into files which are checked by an instructor at the end of the test. The following practical knowledge in computer application is examined:
* data analysis and graphical presentation of results
* text, tables and graphics processing in Latex
* solving mathematical and physical problems using computers
* visualization of physical phenomena using appropriate software tools
* making presentations with clearly displayed problems, methods and results
Literature:
  1. Priručnik i uputstva za LibreOffice paket
  2. Priručnik i uputstva za progamski paket Sage
  3. Priručnik i uputstva za Latex okolinu
3. semester
